RMS Reservation and Quota Rules, Explained
2 October 2026
A mother once told me she was applying to Rashtriya Military School the same way she applied to a Sainik School, listing preferences and waiting for a merit list to sort things out. That's a reasonable instinct, but RMS has its own quota structure, and treating it as identical to AISSEE causes avoidable disappointment.
RMS is a smaller, differently structured system
There are only a handful of Rashtriya Military Schools in the country, and each one draws from a defined catchment rather than the whole nation in the same way. This alone changes the math on how competitive a given school is for your child, independent of the raw entrance score.
The defence and ex-servicemen link
RMS schools have historically maintained a meaningful reservation for wards of defence personnel and ex-servicemen, reflecting the schools' origin and character. If your family has a serving or retired defence background, this is worth exploring specifically rather than assuming your child will only compete in the general pool.
Other categories you should know about
Beyond the defence-linked seats, RMS admissions generally also account for:
- Reservation for SC and ST candidates
- Reservation for OBC candidates from the central list
- A defined share of seats for girls, which has expanded in recent years
- Provision for children with disabilities under applicable rules
The exact share for each category can change from one notification to the next, so I would not quote a fixed number here and ask you to trust it blindly.

What documents tend to matter most
For most RMS applicants, the documents that come up again and again are:
- Caste or category certificate, where applicable, in the prescribed format
- Proof of the parent's defence or ex-servicemen status, where that quota is being claimed
- Domicile or residence proof depending on the specific school's catchment rules
- Birth certificate confirming eligibility within the age window for that year
The mistake to avoid
The biggest mistake I see is a family assuming a document that worked for one exam will automatically be accepted for RMS. Certificate formats, issuing authorities, and validity periods are set by the current RMS notification, and they are not always identical to AISSEE's requirements even though the exams look similar on the surface.
My actual advice
Before you commit time to prep, spend an evening reading the current year's official RMS admission notification end to end, specifically the reservation and eligibility section. It is not long, and it will save you from finding out about a mismatch after your child has already sat the exam.
