The All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE) is the gateway to Sainik Schools, and its structure differs meaningfully depending on which class a child is entering at. Here's a general guide to what each section covers.
Class 6 entry: three core areas
For Class 6 entry, AISSEE typically evaluates students across three broad areas:
- Mathematics — foundational arithmetic and problem-solving appropriate to the primary curriculum
- Language / General Knowledge — a combined section (in English or Hindi medium, depending on the child's choice) covering reading, basic usage, and general awareness
- Intelligence — reasoning questions similar in spirit to the Mental Ability tested in other entrance exams: pattern recognition, classification, and logical sequences
This combination means a Class 6 aspirant needs a fairly balanced skill set rather than excelling narrowly in one area.
Class 9 entry: a more advanced pattern
Students entering at Class 9 face a noticeably different, more advanced structure, generally covering:
- Mathematics, at a level consistent with the secondary curriculum
- English
- Science
- Social Studies
- Intelligence
This reflects the simple fact that Class 9 entrants have already completed several more years of schooling, so the exam expects a broader subject base rather than just foundational skills.
What stays consistent across both
Regardless of entry class, a few things hold true:
- The format is objective, multiple-choice, and typically recorded on an OMR (bubble) sheet
- Intelligence/reasoning is tested at every entry level, so pattern-recognition practice is never wasted effort
- Sections are timed independently, so pacing practice matters as much as content knowledge
A practical note on preparation
Because the Class 6 and Class 9 patterns diverge so much in subject breadth, it's worth confirming which pattern applies before building a study plan — a Class 9 aspirant preparing only arithmetic and reasoning, for instance, would be significantly underprepared for the Science and Social Studies components.
